'superheroes, The Aquabats, formed in 1994 in Orange County as a '
'way to have some harmless fun in a music scene that took itself '
'too seriously. Their Paul Frank designed “power belts,” '
'trademark rash guards, black eye masks, “anti-negativity” '
'helmets and onstage antics quickly caught on, earning the group '
'a fiercely loyal following that spans generations. Their line-up '
'and music is continuously evolving, including Blink 182’s Travis '
'Barker as former drummer "Baron Von Tito."</p><p>In 2012, the '

'Tick, <em></em><em>Coin-O-Matic</em> casts a bright light on a '
'little-known facet of the American mythos: the hidden histories '
'of the band’s home state of Rhode Island, where the everyday '
'dramas of working-class families long collided with the menace '
'of the mafia underworld. As they tapped into their infinite '
'fascination with that strange duality, singer/guitarist John '
'McCauley, guitarist/singer Ian O’Neil, drummer/singer Dennis '
'Ryan, and bassist Christopher Ryan assembled a batch of songs '
'exploring desperation, grief, redemption, and resilience with '
'both cinematic detail and lived-in emotionality. A sharp new '
'turn from one of indie-rock’s most enduringly vital forces, '
'<em></em><em>Coin-O-Matic </em>arrives as a complicated love '
'letter to a way of life slowly slipping from the collective '
'memory.</p><p>The follow-up to <em></em><em>Emotional '
'Contracts</em> (hailed by <em></em><em>Uncut </em>as one of '
'2023’s best albums), <em></em><em>Coin-O-Matic</em> takes its '
'title from a cigarette-vending-machine company that served as '
'the headquarters of Raymond Patriarca—a legendary mobster who '
'ran one of the most ruthless crime families in U.S. history. “If '
'you grew up in Rhode Island years ago, you’d see all these '
'mobsters on the news and then run into them at a restaurant on '
'Federal Hill,” says McCauley, referring to Providence’s version '
'of Little Italy. “They were criminals but also very colorful '
'characters, and I wanted the album to partly reflect a certain '
'nostalgia for that kind of seediness.”</p><p>Recorded at Deer '
'Tick’s home studio, <em></em><em>Coin-O-Matic </em>marks their '
'first self-produced album in their two-decade-plus lifespan, '
'during which they’ve enlisted A-list producers like Dave '
'Fridmann (a Grammy-winner known for his work with The Flaming '
'Lips and Spoon). “At first it was daunting not to have that '
'extra ear in the studio, but it felt like the right time to peel '
'off the Band-Aid and fully trust ourselves,” says O’Neil. “Since '
'we were working in our own space and there weren’t any '
'limitations on time, we had the freedom to take these '
'four-guys-in-a-room rock songs and experiment with different '
'ways of decorating them.” Featuring guest musicians like Los '
'Lobos’ Steve Berlin (on baritone saxophone) and former Deer Tick '
'member Rob Crowell (on organ), <em></em><em>Coin-O-Matic '
'</em>frequently brings a live-wire immediacy to their finespun '
'storytelling. “We’ve never been so comfortable making a record, '
'and I think you can feel that in the performances,” says Dennis, '
'who engineered the LP. “We weren’t beholden to anyone else’s '
'idea of what Deer Tick sounds like, and because of that this '
'album feels like an unfettered capturing of who we are as a '
'band.”</p><p><br></p><p>Centered on a series of vignettes that '
'merge personal memory and extravagantly nuanced fiction, '
'<em></em><em>Coin-O-Matic </em>opens on “Dog Years”—a quietly '
'devastating track that begins in folky intimacy before building '
'to a sorrowful catharsis. In dreaming up the song’s storyline, '
'McCauley looked back on an assisted-living facility near his '
'childhood home, where his own grandfather spent the final years '
'of his life. “The main character of ‘Dog Years’ is based on the '
'guys I used to watch playing chess outside that building or '
'hanging out at the bus stop, smoking cigarettes and shooting the '
'shit,” says McCauley. “I imagined an older gentleman losing his '
'partner and that loss accelerating his aging—almost like he was '
'doing seven years of damage with every passing '
'year.”</p><p>Deeply informed by the singular experience of '
'growing up Irish-Catholic, <em></em><em>Coin-O-Matic </em>next '
'jolts into the ramshackle jangle-pop of “Mary Singletary” and '
'its tender but irreverent tale of interfaith teenage lust. “Most '
'of the stories on the album are from my parents’ generation and '
'the generation before that, when the idea of a Catholic and a '
'Protestant getting together was very scandalous,” says McCauley. '
'“With that song in particular, I liked the idea of writing about '
'Catholic guilt and pre-marital sex and adding in a little bit of '
'<em></em><em>Looney Tunes</em>-style violence—sometimes as a '
'young Catholic boy, I did imagine a vengeful God cutting me down '
'in a cartoonish kind of way.”</p><p>Graced with all the grit and '
'warmth of a classic heartland-rock anthem, “ACI” channels a raw '
'desolation and its first-person portrait of a man imprisoned at '
'the Adult Correctional Institutions outside Providence. “When we '
'were working on the album, I used to drive past the ACI a couple '
'times a week and think of all the stories I’ve heard about the '
'mobsters who ended up there,” says McCauley. “That song started '
'with us throwing ideas around in soundcheck, and over time I '
'realized it was meant to be a prison song about the getaway '
'driver of a robbery gone wrong.” Later, on “Exit Door,” '
'<em></em><em>Coin-O-Matic</em> inhabits a gut-punching '
'melancholy as Deer Tick depict an ex-con’s return to a world he '
'barely recognizes. “I pictured someone who’s maybe in his 70s, '
'and he’s getting out of prison and all his favorite restaurants '
'are gone, everything’s completely different now,” says McCauley. '
'“On one level it’s a celebratory moment of getting your freedom '
'back, but I imagine it’s also really unsettling and confusing '
'for a lot of people.”</p><p>Lending a more intimate layer to '
'<em></em><em>Coin-O-Matic</em>’s underlying theme of '
'impermanence, “Everything Born” finds O’Neil taking the lead and '
'delivering a bittersweet meditation on the inextricable nature '
'of love and grief. “I started that song pretty soon after my son '
'was born, and I was thinking about how anything that comes into '
'existence will eventually be lost and therefore mourned,” says '
'O’Neil, who now has a seven-year-old son and five-year-old '
'daughter. “It’s tough to view the world through that lens, but I '
'wanted to write a song for my children that also speaks to that '
'feeling of precariousness.” Another look at the delicate arc of '
'life and love, “Candy Cigarettes” closes out '
'<em></em><em>Coin-O-Matic </em>with a gorgeously devastating '
'love song partly inspired by a local monument to those who died '
'in the 1981 hunger strike (a protest of British policy against '
'Irish political prisoners). “It’s a song about childhood '
'sweethearts, one of whom comes from Northern Ireland and maybe '
'has a family connection to one of the hunger strikers,” McCauley '
'explains. “There’s some allusions to recent Irish history but in '
'a very subtle way—mostly I wanted to write a pro-immigrant song, '
'and a song about a love that lasts an entire lifetime.”</p><p>In '
'its soulful contemplation of recklessness and consequence, '
'longing and devotion, <em></em><em>Coin-O-Matic</em> ultimately '
'joins the canon of rock albums whose geographically rooted '
'storytelling reveals deeper truths about the human experience. '
'“I think there’s something universal in stories of regret and '
'loss and poor decisions, even if they’re told through the lens '
'of all the odd characters in this little state of ours,” O’Neil '
'points out. “One of the reasons I wanted us to make this album '
'is that I think Rhode Island deserves to be a contender for a '
'place that people sing about,” McCauley adds. “Sonically there’s '
'nothing country about it, but to me it almost feels like a '
'country record set in an urban environment—there’s definitely '
'some outlaws in there. I hope that people see themselves in it, '
'and that they understand a little more about the place that we '

'gothic horror shivers, dark music hall anthems and a perfect '
'punk rock.</p><p>In the rules of rock ’n’ roll most bands fade '
'away but then the Damned were never playing by the rules. One of '
'the originals who sparked the punk rock riot doesn’t mean they '
'had to stay there. Their trip has been long and thrillingly '
'strange and ‘Darkadelic’ is a late period triumph that entwines '
'their core obsessions of garage/psyche/punk rock old black and '
'white Universal horror film soundtracks and even moments of '
'sweet jazz which they sieve with a brooding and enthralling '
'melody. This is a tasteful aural experience with exquisite '
'guitar playing delivered with a breath taking virtuosity but '
'never loses its inventive punk rock edge.</p><p>It feels they '
'have been waiting for decades to deal this hand that sees them '
'surpass their early 80s classics such as Machine Gun Etiquette, '
'Black Album and Strawberries whilst nodding at what was loved on '
'all those classic albums.</p><p>From their 1976 formation to the '
'new album this has been a wild creative trip. Playing by their '
'own rules, The Damned were the first punk band to release a '
'single in Nov 1976, the first punk band to release an album and '
'six months later they were the first punk band to release a '
'second album, they were the first punk band to tour America and '
'then the first punk band to split up. They did this all by the '
'autumn of 1977 before most people had cut their hair and even '
'woken up to punk rock.</p><p>The Damned were then the first punk '
'band to reform and came back with all guns blazing with their '
'third album, 1979’s Machine Gun Etiquette, and then lurch '
'through the years with their powder keg music, sartorial style, '
'innovative takes on psyche and goth and even a brush with pop '
'stardom in their grandiose pop goth phase of the late '
'eighties.</p><p>For a form of music that was meant to be of the '
'moment and flash in the pan, punk has become a much loved '
'historical epoch and it’s perfect that one of the form’s key '
'originators and one of the most prestigious bands coming out of '
'the 70s scene are the only true survivors and are still, '
'somehow, at the top of their dark game.</p><p>Few classic bands '
'still have the inspiration left to make albums and few make '
'albums as good as the aptly named Darkadelic. 2018’s Evil '
'Spirits finally established the band in the top ten of the album '
'charts giving the band the confidence to make an even more '
'guitar driven album that celebrates their garage psych '
'influences that have always been a part of all their best work. '
'Taking advantage of the enforced down time of the pandemic they '
'have been in creative overdrive in the past year either working '
'remotely or in Thomas Mitchener’s studio just outside '
'Watford.</p><p>The Damned may have been the punk pioneers but '
'their muse has always been multi dimensional. From their first '
'rehearsal onwards the band were beyond the cliche. They were the '
'only “classic” punk rock band to combine gothic sounds and '
'horror aesthetic with punk music, shaping a strong identity of '
'their own. They had a baritone crooning vocalist instead of a '
'shouter. They also had great songs and an intense manic energy '
'plus a wild abandon of ideas. The new album brings all these '
'threads together into a perfect whole. Their unlikely strange '
'brew of psychedelia, garage rock, punk rock with a gothic twist '
'has never sounded so well realised. It’s this seamless '
'combination of all the dark and fascinating forms of music that '
'is the key to the band, a combination that reflects the oddly '
'diverse core members of the group.</p><p>You could not get a '
'more unlikely combination of characters into one room if you '
'tried. After four decades the two leading members of the '
'original line up are as chalk and cheese as ever. The vampiric '
'stylish sex god singer David Vanian is still dealing that 24 '
'carat gold croon that pioneered Goth and gives the band a unique '
'dark flavour. The singer is ageless as the mad, bad and '
'dangerous to know Byronic vampire and is still immersed in the '
'attendant B movie culture that he is so imbued with. His partner '
'in crime is the manic songwriter and guitarist/bass player '
'Captain Sensible whose wild stage personae, hilariously perfect '
'monicker and off the cuff quips sometimes masks his brilliant '
'guitar playing and timeless knack for melody and a creative '
'sensitivity that is peaking on the album.</p><p>It’s this '
'fantastically phantasmagoric bizarre core to the band that is '
'key to their genius. They are the sartorial and stylistic '
'creative tension that is the representation of the band’s music. '
'Like all the great bands, the Damned were always a combustible '
'creative arms race from the start. They were formed by the '
'foresight and genius of Brian James who was famously described '
'by The Clash’s Mick Jones as having the vision for punk a year '
'before anyone else. Brian also had a fist full of anthems to '
'back his perception up with. Their classic November 1976 New '
'Rose debut single was released a month before the Sex Pistols '
'‘Anarchy In The UK’ putting a spiky cat amongst the pop '
'pigeons.</p><p>The Damned should have been huge. They had the '
'tunes, the style, the moment and the momentum. They hit the road '
'with Trex, threw up all over the music press and were a '
'thrilling surge of lunatic energy but they were hamstrung by '
'being on an indie label and fell apart as other punk bands were '
'catapulted into the mainstream by the majors.</p><p>Their '
'influence from that period though hangs over the worldwide punk '
'scene. The 1977 debut album with its short sharp shocks of songs '
'was a template for many teenage youth working out what punk was '
'and then its insane speed and wild energy was key to American '
'hardcore and beyond. The album’s darker moments and shivering '
'aesthetic were riders on the storm harbingers to goth and death '
'rock. As the years rolled by The Damned have been acknowledged '
'as one of the fundamentals of alternative rock history and one '
'of the most influential groups of all time. They have been '
'acclaimed by a diverse selection of bands that includes Guns '
'N´Roses, who covered New Rose on Spaghetti Incident, The Foo '
'Fighters, Depeche Mode, Minor Threat, The Misfits, Black Flag, '
'Bad Brains, Green Day, The Offspring…</p><p>That would have been '
'enough for any band but the Damned have remained restless and '
'have survived and thrived. Evil Spirits showed there was still '
'plenty of creativity in the tank and Darkaledic takes this up '
'several notches. Where once they were almost feared for their '
'wreckless and wild abandon the Damned now are respected for '
'their talent and influence and Darkadelic is the perfect '
'document of this sea '

'music quartet from Kyiv, Ukraine. Their “ethno chaos” sound '
'spans years of performances prior to Russia’s 2022 invasion, but '
'war is in everything now. They masterfully blend Ukrainian '
'traditional music with influences from around the world, '
'resulting in an unexpected new '
'music.</p><p><br></p><p>Traditional music has seen a resurgence '
'in Ukraine over the past decades, after being suppressed during '
'Soviet rule. DakhaBrakha uses Ukrainian polyphony as its '
'foundation, interweaving complex rhythmic and melodic structures '
'from India, Arabia, Africa, and Australia. Their music is '
'textural, layered sounds with distinctive percussive heartbeats, '
'thumping bass lines, distorted electric guitars and influences '
'of jazz, spoken word, rap and even punk. DakhaBrakha calls this '
'tapestry of influences “ethno chaos.” And this chaos is a '
'strength, allowing them to draw in strands of music that connect '
'Ukraine with the world.</p><p><br></p><p>They are troubadours, '
'activists and educators. Though their name means Give/Take in '
'the old language, DakhaBrakha is new Ukraine, both pre-colonial '
'and post-Soviet, working within a global network of art and '
'music. They aim to help audiences see Ukraine not as a monolith, '
'but as a cosmopolitan culture that takes in other cultures, and '
'gives in return.</p><p><br></p><p>DakhaBrakha was created in '
'2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art “DAKH” by the '
'avant-garde theatre director Vladyslav Troitskyi. Theatre work '
'has left its mark on the band performances – their shows are '
'always staged with a strong visual element. Projected behind '
'them are a mix of animations from different Ukrainian artists '
'and photos of life in today’s Ukraine. Some are celebratory, '
'bright and bold. Some are dark, others curious, a reflection of '
'the many facets of Ukrainian culture.</p><p><br></p><p>In March '
'2011 DakhaBrakha was discovered by Australian Womadelaide and '
'began their ascent in the international music scene. They have '
'since played hundreds of concerts and performances at major '
'international festivals including Big Ears Festival, Bonnaroo '
'Music & Arts Festival, WOMAD, Roskilde Festival and on the '
'main stage at the Glastonbury Festival. In March 2020, '
'DakhaBrakha won the Shevchenko National Prize for Musical Arts – '
'the biggest award in Ukraine in the sphere of contemporary art – '
'and confirmed its place in the culture once again. In 2023 '
'DakhaBrakha won globalFEST’s Artist Award in the USA and became '

'loves working on his own schedule at his home studio, The '
'Struggle Hut, but after eight years of playing myriad '
"instruments, a visit to his old friend Aaron Dessner's upstate "
'Long Pond Studio in the Spring of 2024 is what finally brought '
'the album home. (Leithauser and Dessner originally met when the '
'National opened for the Walkmen in 2001). Dessner, renowned for '
'his work with The National, Taylor Swift, and Gracie Abrams '
'(among many others), introduced an enormous modern sound, and '
'played many different instruments on nearly every track. '
'Leithauser says Dessner "raised the ceiling, and lowered the '
"floor on the whole thing,” expanding the record's emotional and "
'sonic depth. The collaboration resulted in a record that is both '
'timeless and contemporary, cementing both as versatile and '
'enduring artists in contemporary music.</p><p>“It took me eight '
'years to make this, ” Hamilton says, “Longer than any other '
'record I’ve ever worked on. Barack Obama was president when I '
'started “Fist of Flowers”! So much in my life has changed since '
'I started—my daughters grew, I lost a lot of friends, and I lost '
'my mother...and it seems like the whole world’s been turned '
'upside down—I live a very different life now, but I still truly '
'love writing, recording, and performing music.”</p><p>The lyrics '
'on <em></em><em>This Side of the Island </em>showcase Hamilton’s '
'unrelenting optimism and biting humor and as they consider heavy '
'themes of solitude, love, loss, and resilience. Inspired by '
'events in Hamilton’s personal life, the songs resonate deeply '
"both in today's polarized social and political world, as the "
'title track says “It’s not a beautiful country/as much as I’d '
'like it to be” . “<em></em><em>What </em>do I know?” “What '

'in that title and you’ll change the meaning. Kind of silly '
'questions…until you start digging in. “When the singer burns her '
'torch/no she will not be ignored, and I love her pain, and her '
'pride and her shame/but what do I love now?” he asks himself. '
'“Ocean Roar" opens with Hamilton and his late friend Richard '
'Swift smoking cigars in arental car on Wilshire boulevard, '
'running through a churchyard in Montreal on LSD, and ends '
'fifteen years later in Bedford Stuyvesant on Hamilton’s 40th '
'birthday; capturing the passage of time and the permanence of '
'loss “Down the flames go dancing into the cake/I wish you’d cuss '
'and fuss with us today” . It’s not sentimental, it’s reality. '
'“Knockin’ Heart” presents a determined, stoned, estranged lover '
'dying to send a message: “From the barnyard to the '
'bullfight/from the bleachers to the spotlight/from the factory '
'to the junkyard/you’ll be knockin’ in my heart!!” In “Off the '
'Beach” , the narrator recounts a series of failed marriages, but '
'ends with the forlorned-yet-optimistic “it gets easier every '
'time” . Both “Burn the Boats” , and album-opener “Fist of '
'Flowers” offer undying-but-maybe-naive longings for '
'nearby-but-maybe-unreachable people. Hamilton is routing for '
'these people because he loves their passion, their '
'determination, and their flaws; even if he might not see a happy '
'ending (yet). At the end of the record, rather than presenting a '
'resolution, or a lesson learned, he leaves us with something he '

'of the midwest <strong></strong><strong>Eric D. Johnson</strong> '
'hails from, is a largely flat expanse. Zipping through it on the '
'highway, you’ll see cities and towns rise up in the distance, '
'but blink and you’ll miss other man-made rejoinders to '
'horizontal living dotting the landscape, hill after hill, built '
'from the refuse of the past: landfills. Some of these hills make '
'for great sledding spots, parks, and trails. Others turn organic '
'waste into compost. <em><strong></strong><strong>The '
'Landfill</strong></em>, <strong></strong><strong>Fruit '
'Bats</strong>’ June 12, 2026 album from '
'<strong></strong><strong>Merge Records</strong>, is something '
'else entirely: a mountain dominating the landscape of Johnson’s '
'heart.</p><p><br></p><p>This being a Fruit Bats record, one '
'scales that mountain to take in the view, to see the future '
'spread out as wide and endless as the midwestern plains. “But '
'the mountain that gives us this vantage point,” Johnson says, '
'“is made out of the trash that we’ve created, the collective '
'weight of the past and where it’s taken us.” When he details '
'that view on title track and lead single '
'<strong></strong><strong>“The Landfill” </strong>— “a holy '
'vision / of what could be / and couldn’t be / and could have '
'been” — it’s thrilling to hear him sent soaring by a full '
'complement of instruments. But what’s truly stunning is how, in '
'his recontouring from could to couldn’t to could have been, he '
'has lost none of the vulnerability that was brought to the '
'foreground of his songwriting by 2025’s solo outing, '
'<em></em><em>Baby Man</em>.</p><p><br></p><p>Over the course of '
'his now 25-year career under the moniker, most of Eric D. '
'Johnson’s output as Fruit Bats has been the product of patience '
'and fine-tuning. His songs, to borrow a phrase, are slow '
'growers, given life on albums that encompass long stretches of '
'time and memory. <em></em><em>Baby Man</em> changed that — he '
'disallowed himself from referring to material he’d been working '
'on before laying the album down, utilizing the morning pages '
'technique of stream-of-consciousness, observational songwriting '
'which flowed directly into his afternoon recording sessions. It '
'was both a breathtaking document of Johnson’s skill as a '
'singer-songwriter and an unvarnished account of the two weeks in '
'which he recorded the album.</p><p><br></p><p><em></em><em>Baby '
'Man</em>’s closeness to Johnson’s heart and the close attention '
'to his voice and instrument its minimalist-maximalist ethos '
'required uncorked something in him as he wrote towards a new '
'full band effort. “That session was over,” he explains, “but '
'there was way more to explore. I liked the immediacy of it, and '
'I wanted to see how that would translate into a full-band Fruit '
'Bats record.” Within weeks, he was back in a studio, this time '
'with his band — David Dawda (bass), Josh Mease (guitars, synth), '
'Frank LoCrasto (piano, synth), and Kosta Galanopoulos (drums) — '
'with whom Johnson has spent over a decade building Fruit Bats '
'into one of the most in-demand live acts in indie rock. '
'Listening to <em></em><em>The Landfill</em>, it’s not hard to '
'understand why: simply put, this band '
'smokes.</p><p><br></p><p>Producing the initial recording '
'sessions in Washington’s Bear Creek Studios, Johnson set out to '
'capture “the sound of this band I constantly marvel at, the '
'feeling of being in a room with musicians you love and trust '
'enough to let them cook.” They laid most of it down on the floor '
'— no click tracks, no comped vocals, and minimal overdubs, with '
'frequent collaborator Thom Monahan returning to provide '
'additional production and <em></em><em>The Landfill</em>’s final '
'mix. “It’s how we do things with my other band, Bonny Light '
'Horseman, and I was curious to see how it would work with Fruit '
'Bats,” Johnson notes. “It’s both a very personal record, and my '
'most collaborative to date.”</p><p><br></p><p>It’s also the most '
'live a Fruit Bats record has been since 2009’s <em></em><em>The '
'Ruminant Band</em>, and in paring back the number of tracks that '
'typically layer a full-band song, the psychedelic, technicolor '
'dreaminess of their sound is more vivid than ever. Time and '
'space melt into the sublime as the band gels around Johnson’s '
'hazy croon on <strong></strong><strong>“That Goddamn Sun,” '
'</strong>stretching out to accommodate him as he trips from '
'California to North Carolina. In striking a balance between '
'ecstatic romance and melancholia, '
'<strong></strong><strong>“Think Aboutcha” </strong>occupies the '
'blissful-but-doomed intersection of the E Street Band and Paul '
'McCartney, playful but playing for stakes that are larger than '
'life, while <strong></strong><strong>“Perhaps We’re a '
'Storm”</strong> charges headlong into the '
'unknown.</p><p><br></p><p>All of these songs — '
'<em></em><em>most</em> of the songs on <em></em><em>The '
'Landfill</em>, in fact<em></em><em> </em>— mark themselves '
'immediately as some of the best in Eric D. Johnson’s '
'ever-expanding songbook, seekers and anthems alike. It’s the '
'most daunting peak he’s scaled yet, musically or lyrically: a '
'swashbuckling set of full-band jammers couldn’t be more honest '
'and open-hearted about his hopes and anxieties, his dreams and '
'failures, what’s passed and what will come to pass, were it just '
'him, his guitar, and the '

"volatility. It's not really a joke when the Toronto punks "
'release songs like “If This Tour Doesn’t Kill You, I Will” or '
'put out albums called <em></em><em>The Unraveling of '
'PUPTHEBAND</em>. Though its four members are all best friends, '
'creative dysfunction and interpersonal friction make their '
'snarling and self-deprecating songs thrilling. To their shock '
'and occasional dismay, it’s why their four albums are critically '
'acclaimed and the crowds at their galvanizing live shows have '
'only grown. It hasn’t gone off the rails yet but it definitely '
'could. The possibility it could all blow up at any second is the '
'band’s magic.</p><p><em></em><em>Who Will Look After The '
'Dogs</em>?, PUP’s pummeling and cathartic fifth LP, is their '
'most immediate, no-frills, and hard-hitting full-length yet. Out '
'May 5 via Little Dipper / Rise Records, it’s the culmination of '
'their past decade of constant touring and their palpable, '
'livewire chemistry. While it deals with dark thoughts, it’s not '
'whiny. It’s actually the most hopeful of their catalog, finding '
'frontman Stefan Babcock at his most reflective and vulnerable. '
"Over 12 tracks, he excavates his life's relationships—romantic, "
'with his bandmates, and most ruthlessly, his relationship to '
'himself. Even if PUP weren’t entirely immune from jam-space '
'spats and band-induced aggravations making this album, they '
'scrapped their tedious perfectionism and rediscovered the joy of '
'making loud music together. They truly had fun this time, we '
'promise!</p><p>Following the release of 2022’s <em></em><em>The '
'Unraveling of PUPTHEBAND</em>, their most adventurous and '
'maximalist full-length, the band’s lives changed significantly. '
'Guitarist Steve Sladkowski got married, bassist Nestor Chumak '
'settled into being a dad, and drummer Zack Mykula moved to a new '
'place in Toronto that allowed him to expand his home studio. As '
'the others were making big decisions and getting their acts '
'together, Babcock felt isolated. He had just ended a decade-long '
'relationship and cut himself off from his bandmates. "We don\'t '
"get along when we're making records, so I tend to retreat,” says "
"Babcock.<strong></strong><strong> </strong>“In the past, I'd "
'find comfort in another person, but this time I was at it alone. '
'Being bored and lonely I just started writing music nonstop.” '
'Where the older records took Babcock two to three years to get '
'through 12 tracks, he wrote over 30 songs in a year.</p><p>While '
'writing, Babcock had time to reflect and maybe even grow up. “So '
"many early songs were about how I'm a complete fuck up,” he "
'says. “While that remains true, I stopped hating myself as much '
'as I did when I was younger and the people around me accepted me '
'for who I am.” Where PUP’s previous LPs served as a window into '
'six months of Babcock’s life, the songs here take a holistic '
'view of his romantic partnerships, his friendships, and how he '
'treated himself from his youth to now. In a way, writing this '
'album served as a mirror to his emotional growth. It was hard, '
'occasionally sucked, but was ultimately worth it.</p><p>Babcock '
'began to view these songs as a chronology: the opening tunes '
'like the blistering “No Hope” and the caustic “Olive Garden” '
'were written from the perspective of his past youthful naïveté, '
'the middle third from frequent bouts of self-loathing, and the '
'final few cuts from the acceptance that comes with finally '
'getting your shit together. While “Hallways” was the first song '
'he wrote for the album, immediately following his breakup, it’s '
'tucked towards the end of the tracklist. Despite its raw '
'feelings, there’s levity and heart in its chorus and the lines, '
'“Cause when one door closes, it might never open / There might '
'be no other doors.” It’s bracing and raw, but its lightness '
"keeps it together. “There's a lot of sadness in the back half of "
"the record, but there's a lot more hope here too,” says Babcock. "
"“I'm just coming to peace with who I am.”</p><p>When Babcock "
'brought what he wrote to the rest of the band, they all agreed '
'to let the songs develop as organically as possible. “We '
'realized it should be four people in a room playing,” says '
'Chumak. “The most important thing was trying to do the most with '
'just us.” Historically, the band’s jam sessions are contentious '
'affairs but here, everything fell into place for once. Take the '
'lead single “Paranoid,” which bursts with apocalyptic energy. '
'The song careens from bombastic riffs and Babcock’s ferocious '
'screams, to unrelenting clangs from the rhythm section. It’s the '
'entire band at its heaviest but the chorus is as anthemic and '
'infectious as anything they’ve ever done. It’s quintessential '
'PUP. “We straddle the line between it falling off the rails and '
'then being totally in the pocket,” says Sladkowski. “But our '
'four disparate personalities are what make it '
'interesting.”</p><p>They decamped to Los Angeles to work with '
'producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Death Cab For Cutie, '
'Mannequin Pussy). In the studio, he helped the band work through '
'their nagging tendency to overthink things. When they’d like how '
'a take sounded, he’d remind them that they didn’t have to try it '
'again. He’d tell them when songs felt overwritten and to trust '
"each other in the moment. “If we can't solve an arrangement or "
'songwriting problem in the room between the four of us in a few '
"minutes, then it's not really worth solving because we’d just "
'get into a hole and lose perspective,” says Mykula. “Thanks to '
'John, getting out of our heads made it fun.”</p><p>Congleton '
'also gave the band the space to, in their words, “completely '
'annihilate” the track “Hunger For Death” and rewrite it in the '
'studio. On “Get Dumber,” which features backing vocals from Jeff '
'Rosenstock, there’s a flubbed line (instead of “It’s pretty '
'fucking obnoxious,” Rosenstock yelps, “ah, lyrics…”). On '
'playback, the mistake made the song even more special. They '
'recorded the entire album in three weeks—less than half the time '
'it took to make <em></em><em>The Unraveling of PUPTHEBAND</em>. '
'“When I first started writing the lyrics for this record, '
'everything felt really heavy,” says Babcock. “By the time we '
"recorded it, even those dark songs felt light and fun. We didn't "
'even really fight while making this record. It all just felt '
'fucking awesome.”</p><p>Compared to the rest of their catalog, '
'<em></em><em>Who Will Look After The Dogs</em>? evokes the '
'lightning-in-a-bottle intensity of their self-titled debut '
'(except they are much better at their instruments now). Though '
'they’re all well out of their reckless twenties and have played '
'nearly a thousand shows since then, there’s still unpredictable '
'mayhem in the arrangements and an acerbic bite in the writing. '
'“Because we were less precious with everything this time, it '
'felt like we were capturing the feeling of being in a band for '
'the first time when you finally hear everything clicking,” says '
'Babcock. There’s even a newfound optimism and hope here, '
'especially on the surprisingly graceful closer “Shut Up.” During '
'the penultimate track “Best Revenge,” Babcock sings, “The best '
'revenge is living well / Didn’t even know what was right in '
'front of me.” Even when things seem irrevocably fraught and you '
'slip back into stupid old habits, being around your closest '
'friends can get you through. Or, at the very least, they can '
'tell you to get over yourself.</p><p>“With the band, I have such '
'an intense, personal connection with those three guys that I '
"don't have with anybody else in my life,” says Babcock. "
'“Sometimes you have to really go through the shit to have that '
'big high of creating something with your best friends that you '
